Aubrey Raech’s review published on Letterboxd:
This film is a technical masterclass. My problem lies with its being couched as a comedy. There is very little funny about how puerile, misogynistic, and violently malicious the entire town behaves toward a woman trying to survive. It is not only the townsfolk that are guilty of this, but also the young boy who witnesses all of this and even participates in the abject dehumanization of her, right up until the last couple of scenes.
The film shouldn't have been called Malena, since it's not really about her at all; a more apt title would be Patriarchy: A Tragedy.
