Pan's Labyrinth

Pan's Labyrinth ★★★★

Second time watching it and it packs a much more powerful punch when I know what I’m getting myself into. The juxtaposition of a child’s wondrous imagination with the horrors of war is excellently done. The fantasy elements were great and the horrifying war elements were also great. When these two elements combine and clash towards the end, a harrowing climax is reached. War films depicting childhood are great, Come and See and Ivan’s Childhood do a great job at capturing this, but Pan’s Labyrinth seeks to show the effect it has on those who are not directly involved. The loss of innocence can happen to someone even tangentially related in the war and that fact is all the more devastating.
