River of Grass

River of Grass ★★★★

An admirable debut feature for Reichardt, but it's more of a showcase for the state of indie cinema in the nineties, than it is a calling card for the person who would become one of the great living American directors a quarter-century later. I don't get the Tarantino comparison that others have suggested. River Of Grass falls more in line with Lodge Kerrigan, who also debuted in 1994, and Allison Anders, in its more meditative and ponderous plot driven approach to storytelling, that paints a rather broad sense of character development, and eschews the conventional beats of narrative cause and effect.
