Isn’t it funny that many people today still scratch their heads wondering why a film like Showgirls was so awfully misunderstood at the time of its initial release while they’re actually doing the same again? Obviously, history futilely repeats itself but I love the fact that every once in a while there are films which reveal the ineptitude of each era’s critical and cinephilic culture. This year, it is Last Night in Soho. I have SoHo much to say about this film but for now, I’m just gonna save my breath by saying: Last Night in Soho easily welcomes Edgar Wright into the club of Michael Powell, Nicolas Roeg, Bob Fosse, Brian De Palma, Mario Bava and Dario Argento. Much better than Neon Demon or Black Swan, way much higher than pretentious films like Mother! or Birdman, and creatively much more “Swingin’ 60s” than Cruella.
