Azrael’s review published on Letterboxd:
Captain America: The Winter Soldier takes a leap in quality for the franchise. Not only does it delve into more complex themes, but there is finally a broader sense of seriousness here. Its impacts are much more significant and feels strongly so.
What makes this movie better than its predecessor and all the other franchise films that came before it is the sincerity has finally returned. There is of course still the quota-filling one-liners but they work much better and are much more tolerable. The action is also just so good.
Once again the emotionality is here. The characters are all portrayed as their best which is so exciting to watch. Everything feels brutal and with the themes that it tackles, it fits harmoniously. Chris Evans once proves why he is so good as Captain America.
Fast-paced, exciting and finally some much needed substance to grab on to. There is much more at stake here and the film does well in higlighting that. Definitely a successful little shift in tone for the franchise.
