Knife+Heart ★★★★

A few years back, I got into a conversation with friends about who would die first in a slasher movie. Eventually, it got around to me and the consensus was that I wouldn't die, because I wouldn't even be in the movie, because when was the last time you saw a slasher movie with a gay person in it?

Enter Knife+Heart, the uber-gay modern-day slasher I never knew I needed. An operatic contemporary Giallo that literalizes its camp aesthetic by making virtually the entire cast queer as fuck, Knife+Heart is deeply emotional, gorgeously shot, and even at times intensely erotic.

Like all good gialli, there's a compelling mystery and lurid violence, both of which are pulled off with aplomb - though, if I have one quibble, it's that the deaths aren't quite operatic enough, at least after the first one. The climax is also fabulous, with the killer getting exactly what's coming to them. Meanwhile, the characters have a kind of psychological realism that grounds the showy cinematography, and M83's score is very appropriate.

All in all I had a blast with this, and it comes highly recommended if you enjoy Giallo and/or gay porn.
