I actually enjoyed this a heck of a lot more second time through.
Partly it was knowing what it did and didn't use from the other versions, meaning I was able to just appreciate it for what it was in its own right. It's not as thoughtful or thought-provoking as the anime versions, but more so than your standard Hollywood blockbuster. It's executed with a lot of visual flair too, which is a bonus. The pace felt weird to me the first time, but it didn't trouble me on this rewatch.
It's not a great movie, but I think it's a good one, and probably better than most give it credit for.
