The Pearl of Death ★★★★

“Creeper! Creeper!”

Various bits of the plot don’t quite hold up, and Neill has some uncommon directorial slip-ups (the eventual reveal of the Creeper’s face is singularly undramatic), but that’s more than counterbalanced by all the stuff that does work: Holmes on the back foot, forced to prove himself; several nice set pieces; the majority of Neill's direction is firmly on point; all hung around a mystery that’s neat, even if its successful resolution relies a mite too much on luck.
