Eve's Bayou

Eve's Bayou ★★★★½

god this is so good. it's even better the second time, when you understand what's going to happen, but somehow it's still hypnotic and manages to surprise you.

i had a conversation with a friend a while ago about this film, and how it's technically a coming of age story. I think it's both a coming of age story and a story about womanhood and trauma. Eve, Cisely, their mother, Aunt Moselle and even Elvorah are all different, complex women, playing into or deviating from their assigned roles in society. I'll stop here because I don't have the range for this.

Jurnee and Debbi Morgan deserved oscars for this.
