A slice of life film as seen through the experiences of a 14 year old boy. He is at the centre of this film, surrounded by the performances of two amazing actors, Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal. But it is Mulligan's film. Such a nuanced story brought to life by these actors! And I mean nuanced in a good way. I am not a fan of 'in your face' films which are so common these days.
Nuanced means a complex story told simply and directly, perhaps just with one camera shot answering many questions. Nuanced means a focus on the actors, and time being given for their reactions and responses. We get time to see in all three main characters' faces what is going on within them.
The story is painful. The 1960 circumstances are painful.
The cinematography is fantastic. And so the acting.
Thank you, Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan for an amazing screenplay. And such directing and editing!
P.S. The actor playing the boy 'Joe' is Ed Oxenbould and he is superb. I reached for every word he said and every camera shot of his facial expressions.
