Movie #2 with the parents.
This is a favorite hold-over from childhood. Laugh-out-loud sight gags, prat falls, and a mud fight. James Garner is charmingly glib, Jack Elam (such a great character actor) is at his gruffest as the reluctant town-loser-turned-deputy, Bruce Dern is the dim-witted youngest member of a local hoodlum family, and Joan Hackett shines as the klutzy mayor's daughter (oh man, the baking scene with the flour).
It has one of the best running jokes about a jail with no bars in the windows....
