Hatching 2022
One more movie in the sub genre of films about the internet. All of these films have the same subject matter but very few really GET it. Hatching is one that doesn’t. It tries to tackle the mommy blogger space but there’s a disconnect between the overall story and it’s horror elements. Jack Be Nimble 1993
Jack Be Nimble straddles the line between cheek and sincerity, and it really works to the movies favour. I think the director knows how inherently ridiculous the premise is, but he works with the material as if it’s deadly serious. It’s also so pretty to look at. The images feel straight out or a dream or storybook. It’s almost like the 90s version of Lemora: A Childs Tale of the Supernatural.
Now that’s a double feature I’d pay money to see.

Knife+Heart 2018
I ADORE this film. Knife+Heart is beautiful, thought-provoking, and sleazy AF. It's hard to straddle the line between hardcore and sensitive, and this film manages it perfectly.
Giallo has also been a near exclusively heteronormative genre and it's nice to see a film that adds some queerness to it. It's also the most risk-taking visual film I've seen in years, not only using vibrant color but negative film.
Also, the soundtrack by M83 wound up immediately on my Spotify playlist!

Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer 1984
I’ve always found time loops really terrifying as a concept. Mamoru Oshii somehow made the chillest and most aesthetically appealing time loop ever.
