A claustrophobic, deceptively ambitious odyssey that starts as a breakup story until you realize you've gone and let Charlie live rent free in your head. It's his surrealistic universe and it's tinged and colored for us to see in that heady but emotionally stirring way.

Let's also get this Oscar campaign for Alchemy and the rest of the stellar sound team going.

That Hanks!  Just the guy for turning all the stranded island what-if-isms into what-would-I-do’s. What a lonely and traumatic feeling that lingers long after this one.

One does not simply watch the first 20 minutes of this while eating lunch.

He uses every doohickey in the toolbelt, from sound to lighting to camerawork, to not just tell the story but create a sense of curiosity and fully transport us into the wonder and the horror of an alien invasion. I guess that's what inspired a generation of Hollywood copycats, but none of them can make a family of heroes feel so real and precious to us. The Spielberg journey prioritizes the individuals navigating extraordinary phenomena, and that's what makes us believers.

I can’t think of a more thematically tough and maturing movie for children. Atreju’s fantasy adventure mirrors Bastion’s journey of self worth as he grieves for his mom, and Bastion regains power from The Nothing of despair by connecting with stories. I myself am shook 25 years later. Also we want puppets and robots back.
