Rewatched by Ronan Doyle Pro
Days of Heaven 1978
Malick's second film is easily one of the most visually resplendent I have ever borne witness to. Decadent but never indulgent, his setting of his narrative in a sprawling Texas farm gives rise to no end of jaw-dropping shots capturing the natural beauty of fading day with wide angles and even wider aspirations. Some might not be satisfied with the lax implementation of traditional storytelling, Malick preferring to consign the real characterisation to his landscapes, to his juxtapositions, to his remarkable There Will Be Blood-influencing scenes of hell brought forth to earth. Few stories have been so comprehensively elucidated through visual means; if you can make it through without your mouth falling open in awe you're a stronger soul than I.
