The Day of the Jackal

The Day of the Jackal

Fred Zinnemann's first rate thriller details a planned assassination of Charles de Gaulle. The narrative cuts back and forth between the relentless hired gun and the detective who is trying to stop him. It never loses focus during its 2 1/2 hour running time. Tense, precise and beautifully structured, it is a model of its kind from a great director. The suspense is terrific even though we know in advance how history played out.
