As warm, sunny, and vibrant Call Me By Your Name was, as cold, wintry, and grey is Luca Guadagnino's remake of Suspiria. Set in and around a stately, marble-clad building that is as oppressive as it is imposing, it is a bleak, mechanical horror movie that slowly tightens its icy hands around your throat, not to release its grip until the frenzied finale.
Impressive performances from Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton (reunited from A Bigger Splash) and a great score by Thom Yorke.
I'm just not sure the explicit political context (set in 1977, the film repeatedly references Palestinian hijackings, the Baader-Meinhof group, the Nazi legacy, and the Berlin Wall) really adds anything of value to the narrative.
