A Story of Floating Weeds

A Story of Floating Weeds ★★★★

Into Ozu's silence I begin with this film. After seeing many of his later acclaimed classics from the 50's, watching a silent film from him feels so fresh and original. It still maintains his same unique style and way of storytelling. But being silent and not dialogue driven like his later films provides such a visual artistry like none other. His images speak for themselves and the cinematography in his films has never been better. Ozu's usual slow build of character development unfolds here leading to a gut wrenching finale. A really great film overall and I cannot wait to watch more silent Ozu. 8/10
