    Turvo 2021

    Tadeu Bijos

★★★½ Watched by Tadeu Bijos 10 Dec 2021

"TURVO" is a sweet, melancholic and sentimental take on the coming-of-age film, that uses its genre-detours to build something more profound, but far from ambiguous. It is a rare hang out movie that ultimately manages to be about a sort of catholic awakening that is quite forceful, but not didactic or preachy. It is very smart in how it uses common religious signifiers of Brazilian small city life that often mean nothing in our day-to-day interactions, to build out and…

this is pure, it made me feel closer to my mother, somehow.

those frames of new york actually reminded me of my times in brussels, rather than my nyc experiences per se. I remember, so vividly, walking alone from my hostel at Place du Jeu de Balle to the train station: the buildings, the streets, the emptiness, the colors and even the people looked like those captured by Chantal.
Those firsts scenes from News From Home were so similar to what I’ve seen in Belgium, it makes me truly realize: Chantal found home in a foreign place.

More than Tarantino screaming at reporters, Spike Lee is the most unapologetic filmmaker of the last several decades. He flashes pictures of great African American legends that are briefly mentioned because as much as this is a story of these 4 (5) men, it's even more so a story of African American pride, and even more than that, it's a story of the RIGHT for African American pride. Spike Lee has a voice - one could even argue Spike Lee…
