    Synchronic

    ★★★

Synchronic just didn’t do it for me. Too sentimental in places, too budget in others. The ideas, as always, are ambitious but I prefer Benson and Moorhead’s explorations of more massive far-reaching phenomena; perhaps the focus here was a little too internal for me. I’d love to see it with those guys in the lead roles, as we’ve seen them pull this off so impressively before. I wish I hadn’t seen Anthony Mackie’s Black Mirror episode before this because I…

    ★★★★

Rewatched for the first time in years and oh my. It’s just the leanest, most disgusting, well-paced piece of brilliance. Like... SO GOOD.

    Wounds

    ★★★★

Dark and unsettling, Wounds wallows in the filth of human nature and what’s writhing just beneath the surface. The deadly sins are all writ large here. Armie Hammer is superb as the not-quite-loser bartender in over his head, wracked by dissatisfaction, who wouldn’t know what he wanted even if he got it... until he does. Midsommar

    ★★★★

With Midsommar, Ari Aster has beckoned horror out from the shadows, drenched it in light, and scattered flower petals at its feet. Tense and shocking in places, suffering from a lack of urgency in others, and rarely surprising, this film is never not stunning to look at. Aster’s second is one I look forward to exploring and luxuriating in for its bold vision, even if it didn’t deliver the viceral, nerve-shredding punch I’d hoped for.
