Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ★★½

Love Pitt and DiCaprio, both together and separate. Many other fun supporting perfs, particularly Qualley. Great soundtrack, great '60s LA recreations, some A+ scenes. Love QTs genuine affection not just for the culture of this era, but for the ephemeral, forgotten culture of this era -- the radio ads and middlebrow TV shows and of course, the B movies.

That Leo and the little girl scene was incredible and should have been its own movie. The sequence of Pitt driving home to feed his dog is another winner (it's more fun than it sounds on paper, ha). And while Robbie doesn't have much to do, the watching The Wrecking Crew sequence is pretty wonderful.

But man, what an indulgent, disjointed, messy, bloated thing this is overall. I love hangout movies, but between this and Death Proof I'm realizing I don't particularly love Tarantino in hangout mode. I also don't love him in his juvenile, sadistic, cartoony bloodbath finales, especially when this one has added "Mark Wahlberg talking about 9/11" reactionary subtext of "the Manson murders wouldn't have happened if only there was a macho wife-killing 1950s real man type around."

So a mixed bag overall, but the ending left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Feels like I might drop even lower on this with more time. Def one of QTs weaker efforts, unfortunately.

EDIT: dropped rating a half star. The more I think about this movie the more I dislike it.
