“I don’t like cats, I like men, and so do you.”

This is messy but I love its presentation of female friendship, and how it leads with that as an example of what a romance should feel like - two people completely at ease with one another, plus the added curiosity that comes with physical attraction. (These women adore each other, but they acknowledge that’s not really quite enough.) Seeing Spencer Tracey fall head over heels with a smile at…

    Mad Max: Fury Road

Watched this again after finishing Kyle Buchanan’s book about it, which was incredibly entertaining and fascinating and will fill you with respect for the producers who really protect their directors (not something you’d catch me saying every day). The creative dedication given to every element of the production is inspiring and the only respectable and dignified way to operate on an obscenely large Hollywood budget, if you ask me.

    I’d say though it’s very much a winner’s history of filmmaking,…

Read this script the other day, which zipped along pleasantly enough with some nicely defined characters and conflicts, I can see why it’s attracted such high calibre performers. But I’m curious if it’s been made to feel more substantial and relevant and a bit less mean in pre-production.

Looks likely the film will be watchable but conventional, a twisty plot that’s only twisty to keep your attention, because the ideas the script raises don’t go deeper than “some people are…

    I'm Your Man

Well no of course this isn’t saying anything very new but I’m a total sucker for films that are about AI but not really, and are in fact about how people romantically project on one another. And this one is put together in just such a lovely way by all involved.

    The 355

Given the amount of trailer time star Jessica Chastain spends explaining who The 355 is (an unnamed female secret agent of George Washington’s in the American Revolution) you might hope this present day-set spy movie is about to let us in on a world of centuries-old female secret societies ripe for MacGuffin-hunting January nonsense, blunt feminist metaphors and several outstanding actors having a ball amongst the silliness.

Well, the MacGuffin and the blunt metaphors are there, but unfortunately producer Chastain…

    Babe: Pig in the City

About halfway through Babe: Pig in the City is the line: “The random developments that delivered him to this, his moment of annihilation. As terror gave way to exhaustion, Babe turned to his attacker, his eyes filled with one simple question, ‘why’.”

A few minutes after this a dog says “a murderous shadow lies hard across my soul”.

There’s a harrowingly intense and action heavy sequence where terrified animals are scooped up and trapped by the local pound all accompanied…
