Escape from New York

Escape from New York ★★★★

I love this movie. It had been a good 3 or 4 years since I saw it so it was overdue for a rewatch. Kurt Russel in one of his best roles, the thick atmosphere of dread, the tense and droning score, the apocalyptic New York setting and a great cast are some of the highlights here.

I really love how Carpenter was able to make a solid sci fi film just as easy as a horror film. And by blending in a lot of horror elements (the score, violence, atmosphere etc) he was able to make some unique films that combined elements of both horror and sci fi. The Thing is probably the best example of this.

The one thing that stood out for me during this rewatch was the score. My favorite horror films are always ones that have a solid score to accompany the solid film making. Argento and Goblin are a perfect example of this and I've always thought Carpenters scores complimented his film making perfectly. Such a talented man!

Now onto the movie itself. I love the plot, the characters, the atmosphere... It kind of plays out like a cool video game. Sneak into a crime ridden Manhattan and fend off all sorts of crazy individuals and gangs in order to rescue the president. Epic! The Duke is super badass with his chandelier car, we've got Tom Atkins, Donald Pleasence playing the president, Ernest Borgnine, and more! I love how dark and creepy the New York streets are and how you never know what kind of danger is around each corner.

Now where does one purchase car chandeliers from? Wal Mart maybe.
