Ben Pinsent’s review published on Letterboxd:
This is a film that does not know who it is for.
Its only loosely adapted from the source material and has made an incredibly poor transition from written word to big screen.
Speaking as someone who enjoyed listening to the book, I cannot understand the story or characters, which just move from one place to another without real rhyme or reason.
They have removed the main draw of the source material namely the 80's references and the crazy worlds that our heroes can explore.
Maybe it was too expensive to get all the intellectual properties in the film, maybe it was the fault of the book which was probably unfilmable and problematic, to begin with.
Either way this film is a disappointment for Steven Speilberg
