• Dune

Rewatched tonight on HBO Max. While IMAX is the superior experience the movie is still incredible in any format. WB better stop teasing us and issue the official greenlight for part 2. The wait is already agonizing

  • Dune

Wow. Just wow. I can't believe a great Dune movie actually exists. I've had high hopes for this for a very long time and it delivered.

I'm hard pressed to think of another big budget, epic that so totally transports you since The Return of the King. The movie is that absorbing. Everyone is already raving about the visuals - rightly so - but the story telling sucks you in like few movies can.

The acting is phenomenal across the…

    Paranormal Activity

I admire the 0 budget film making and think the result is moderately effective. That said, these are some of the dumbest characters I've ever seen. Once you have a ouija board setting itself on fire and demonic footprints in the house, it's time to be done arguing about whether or not to a call an exorcist

    4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days

If art is supposed to unsettle you - and I think it is - 4 Months succeeds brilliantly. This is a hard film to watch and forces everyone to confront hard truths about their position on abortion, regardless of which side its on.

For me the film hit very close to home. To lay my cards on the table (and risk the wrath of the Letterboxd hivemind), I am very pro-life. That belief comes both from conviction and from my…

  • No Time to Die

    No Time to Die

If No Time to Die doesn't match the heights of Casino Royale and Skyfall, it nevertheless feels like a fitting end to Craig's run. If it's the weakest of those three, it also fits with them in drawing on the interplay between classic Bond and 21st century Bond.

Casino Royale was THE Bond origin story, proving the character can exist in the modern world.

Skyfall is a heartfelt defense of the classic Bond formula, while simultaneously transcending it.

    No Time…

  • Squid Game

    Squid Game

Believe the hype! Squid Game is fantastic! It perfectly walks the line of being very disturbing without feeling exploitive. My only significant complaint is that the English dialogue in the last couple episodes is very stilted. I blame Netflix more than the film makers for that. I'm sure I'd do no better trying to write dialogue in my non-native language. Netflix should have provided the resources to solve that problem.

    Bring on season 2!

    24 Frames

    No. Just no.

I'll start with the disclaimer that if I was forced to watch this on repeat Clockwork Orange style, I may eventually have an epiphany, renounce myself as a tasteless Philistine, and take back everything in this review. But I don't think so.

My mom likes to send my kids animated e-cards for their birthdays. They're typically of some kitschy painting where the individual pieces move and/or interact. They're mildly amusing for a minute and then you move…

  • Miami Vice

    Miami Vice

Virtually unwatchable. I saw this back in theaters and didn't like it, but I generally like (and occasionally love) Michael Mann so I wanted to give it another chance. Nope. I was right the first time.

The movie looks very cool because it's a Michael Mann film. But the script and characters are completely MIA. Does anyone know or care what's happening in this movie? I doubt it. It's completely vapid. The end result feels like a parody of Heat or Collateral - two movies you're far better off watching or rewatching than this mess

  • Quantum of Solace

    Quantum of Solace

20 minutes of Casino Royale epilogue. 90 Minutes of half-baked, dull action

  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

It's probably been 15+ years since I watched this. It's always risking watching an old favorite after that long. God knows there are plenty of examples where they don't hold up, but thankfully this isn't one of them. My only disappointment is that 15 years later there is still no English translation of the original novels!

  • The Conjuring

    The Conjuring

Made me thankful for the high quality horror from A24

  • Unsane

I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and the movie to become a reality bender. The big twist is that it never does. The script is exactly what it appears and it’s very, very dull
