I could tell you so many things about the characters in this film, but almost nothing about what actually happens to them by the end. From what I've seen, it feels like Bergman makes a lot his films this way, using characters and their emotional conditions to illustrate the nuances of human connection. This is fine but I can't help but feel that his best examples are the ones that synthesize those nuances with a gripping narrative and setting (like shame, persona, seventh seal.)
