    Scanners III: The Takeover

I hope this mess didn't cost any money to make cause god damn that was stupid.  The former installment was actually pretty good, but damn near every single thing about this one was some doodoo.  Main problem: Liliana Komorowska is absolutely awful.  Basically just imagine Milla Jovovich but with an absolute black hole of negative charisma.  I can tell at the end they were trying to do a Videodrome thing which should have been cool. And Valerie Valois was nice to look at.  But like everything else in this movie, it cannot even begin to make up for the rank foul odor of this trash heap.

    Scanners II: The New Order

    ★★★½

Actually........... not bad, for this sort of direct-to-video shlock. If you like 80s movies like Trancers this is right along those lines. And because this is Scanners you can expect plenty of heads exploding and stuff like that. It has a subtle near-future atmosphere including what is clearly a Vangelis inspired score. Completely unnecessarily, the romantic subplot was actually decently written. Go figure on that one. The young lovers in the dark atmosphere is almost like something Joel Schumacher would have directed at this time (Flatliners, Lost Boys).

Now this is the real return to form Bond film they wanted to make with Diamonds Are Forever. It has everything you expect from a Bond film while also being one of the most oddly original movies in the entire series. They are going for a Blaxploitation angle here and while not totally authentic in that pursuit, they do have some great actors here including Yaphet Kotto and the movie is made in the 70s which goes a long way…

The Man with the Golden Gun

    ★★½

So this time around it seems like they are trying to shed a lot of the Bond movie formula and make something more like a typical action movie. I don't know if the movie has just aged horribly or what, but outside of the limited appearance of the usual "Bond stuff" (MI-6, secret hideouts, actually being a spy) the movie is incredibly mediocre and dull. Christopher Lee appears as the villain but don't get your hopes up, he's really not…
