Benjamin Green’s review published on Letterboxd:
Howd my life get so damn small?
First time watch: November 2020
Eddie Murphy is back! Dolemite is My Name feels like a new career highlight balancing his loud eccentric comedy with more heartfelt serious moments in a biographical film about Rudy Ray Moore.
But whilst Murphy is centre stage there is a whole host of strong performances from the scene stealing Wesley Snipes to the ever impressive Da'Vine Joy Randolph....and then they slip Bob Odenkirk in for the cherry on top. With a well written screenplay there is a constant enegery and strong pace to proceedings that is uplifting and fun.
It can easily be written off as formulaic and conventional at times as it depicts the rise of a star but it remains grounded and heartwarming as Murphy gives one of his most mature performances yet. It would be harsh to call it a comeback, especially after his good work on Dreamgirls but this is an opportunity for Murphy to capitalise.
