The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Fincher knows what he's doing with his bleakly nihilistic adaptation of the mega-best-selling novel. It is often viscerally darker and more vicious than its literary counterpart ever got. What works best is the pacing and mood, which is completely a team effort of Zaillian's script, Renzor's score, an expert cast and the Oscar winning editing team of Baxter and Wall. Rooney Mara specifically stuns you with her expansion of Lisbeth as a complex anti-hero you feel for from frame one. Here's one first film in a trilogy you'll want to continue.

We Need to Talk About Kevin

An unconventional take on a very conventional horror plot (the killer kid). The Oscar should rightfully go to Tilda Swinton, who has to carry the entire film, not only as she is in every scene, but in flashbacks and flash-forwards that had to be as tricky to film as they are to the viewer. This movie will get under your skin in ways you wouldn't expect.

    Le Havre

It's hard not to fall in love with this quirky little Finnish film. The way it embraces everyday circumstances and fate with its twisted sense of humor and slight commentary is a remarkable style. Writer/Director Kaurismäki seems intent on covering the clichà (C) drama with a thick layer of irony. Every performance and camera move slyly evokes classic cinematic conventions.

  • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

    Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

A good old-fashioned cold war spy film with style (probably the most 70s stylistic visual design since ZODIAC). Also packed with incredible casting. Gary Oldman's getting all the attention but pay attention to scene stealers Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch. MI4 it ain't though, so if you're expecting action, prepare yourself for some heavy British dialects and cunning plot twists.
