story of a young woman navigating tradeoffs between personal fulfillment and the artificial pressure to get a “real” job. touching and tragic with notably well written dialogue, all underscored by the highly relatable dread associated with entering adulthood in a country without a social safety net. i absolutely adored this movie, what a banger.
It’s hard to get past the questionable ethics involved in making this film, which ultimately had the appeal and aesthetic of a Vice documentary. Some of the interviews were downright insensitive (why would this filmmaker continually ask men who were just interrogated and tortured at gitmo “what they did” over and over…pushing one subject to the point were he removed himself from filming?).
Also upsetting was the director’s choice to introduce each protagonist’s image with their gitmo “rap sheet” -…
