a brilliant adaptation of a brilliant book. james franco has never been my favorite actor, but the skill of the supporting cast forces him to stay on his a-game, delivering my now-favorite performance of his. the changes from book to screen were so well written, most prominently the development of bill, played by king of my heart george mckay. cried like a little baby at the end, because though its set up as a historical fix-it thriller, it’s actually one of the greatest love stories ever told.
