Will McGee’s review published on Letterboxd:
My sixth by Richard Linklater, a famous/infamous high school coming of age comedy with an ensemble cast that has a few big names hidden here and there (Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Matthew McConaughey, Parker Posey, etc). After the last day of school in May of 1976, the junior high and high school students get ready for the summer and for the big end of school party. We follow stoners, jocks, freshmen, seniors, no-goodniks, geeks, and others on a journey that begins after lunch and goes until the next morning, set to a soundtrack of Nothing But The Hits. Linklater, as always, favors realism and a sort of down-to-earth quality to big, theatrical set piece scenes. There are story arcs but the film works better just as a snapshot of 1970s youth culture than as a traditional narrative. Not that it’s like, avant-garde or anything - just a laid-back evening, cruising around town and partying with friends.
