A beautiful, compact Western which is the impressive feature directing debut of John Maclean. With a charismatic central performance from Michael Fassbender as a desperado and a solid and quirky performance from Kodi Smit-McPhee as a 16 year-old Scottish boy looking for his lost love, it's a strange and beautiful film. A bit whimsical at times, a bit brutal at times, it's a fresh take on a genre that has been explored a lot. Stunningly shot by Robbie Ryan who has previously collaborated with Andrea Arnold as cinematographer on her films Red Road, Fish Tank, and Wuthering Heights. In Slow West (shot in New Zealand) it's one of the most beautiful landscapes for a Western with a distinctive look with more colour and precisely framed shots. A real treat of a film.
