Blaine McGaffigan’s review published on Letterboxd :
Del Toro’s debut is a bazaar examination of the corruption of eternal life.
You know this is not an American film when there isn’t an attractive person in the whole movie. Luppi does a great job in the lead role, but Ron Perlman is best. His strange looks and intriguing vocal style make him a delight on screen.
The main character is Jesus Gris who dies and reborn after using the Cronos device. It turns him basically into a vampire.
There are stylized sets that are a glimpse at the vision that is to come from Del Toro. Specifically, La Guardia’s chamber and the inside of the Cronos device.
