Enclosed space. Well drawn characters. A whodunit twist thrown in to unbalance the audience. A lot of shooting. A lot of missing. A lot of ricochets. A lot of crawling around with minor (and major) gun-related injuries. This may have been the perfect movie for me. I need to see it again to make sure. All I know is Ben Wheatley is a beast.
Here’s the thing. I went in with low, low expectations because I couldn’t stand Split and Unbreakable is in my top all-time films. Against my better judgment, I ended up liking the film. Sure, execution is sloppy. I won’t dispute that. Sure, the ending is a little too Shyamalan-y. I, also, won’t dispute that.
I think if someone else had written this film but used Shyamalan’s outline and scrapped the final reveal wholesale for something less on the nose, then…
