2018 Superhero Rewatch: In which I return to superhero movies I've seen before to see how time has treated them.
The first Avengers movie gets by a lot on spectacle -- seeing all the Marvel heroes together for the first time. The sequel doesn't have that luxury, so it falls a little short. While world-building existed since the first Iron Man, this is the first time where it feels slightly intrusive. In other words, a good portion of this movie seems to exist to lay ground for Civil War and beyond.
That said, there's still a lot to like. Spader's Ultron is nicely creepy, the team dynamics work, and Hawkeye feels like the keystone of the team. And the creation of the Vision? Outstanding.
