2018 Superhero Rewatch Adjacent
Black Panther is an effective (if somewhat predictable) superhero movie elevated by truly masterful execution. Coogler pulls powerful performances from his cast and his team create incredible visuals. I was rather surprised at how much of an ensemble piece this is, though -- not that the performances were good (it's a good cast), but that the story belonged almost as much to Nakia, Okoye, and Shuri as it did to T'Challa. Marvel hasn't completely solved its villain problem (yet another villain who is mostly the evil version of the hero), but Killmonger's motivations were at least more complicated and understandable than most who have preceded him. One of the MCU's best.
