2018 Superhero Rewatch: In which I return to superhero movies I've seen before to see how time has treated them.
The first Superman cartoon is a pretty straightforward animated short. A bad guy hatches a scheme to destroy Metropolis with an energy cannon. Mild mannered Clark Kent turns into Superman to stop him. Lois Lane doesn't notice that her co-worker looks different without glasses. But so much foundation was laid in this short that it still amazes me. The animation is so beautiful, so fluid, that you'd be hard-pressed to find a later cartoon that looks better. And it's a crying shame that people so often neglect Bud Collyer on their list of Superman actors. His vocal transformation from Clark to Superman is as amazing as Christopher Reeve's live-action one. This really is a classic.
