2018 Superhero Rewatch: In which I return to superhero movies I've seen before to see how time has treated them.
Look, it was never going to be a contest. My whole superhero rewatch project is fun for me, but the simple truth is that, at the end of the day, Superman is my favorite superhero and this is my favorite superhero film.
There are other great performances, but no one lost himself in a hero and his secret identity the way Christopher Reeve did. There are magnificent musical scores, but nothing that sends shivers up my spine like John Williams. There are dazzling special effects, but nothing that makes me believe what I'm seeing like Superman floating from the sky to retrieve a cat from a tree. This is the gold standard.
I watched this on Superman's 80th anniversary, the day of the release of Action Comics #1000, with my son in my lap. He's not eight months old yet, so he'll probably have to view it a few more times to grasp the nuance.
That's okay. I can watch it again.
