Candyman ★★★

Nia DaCosta does a good job at setting up the lore of Candyman by repurposing the first film as a legend that artfully weaves Black trauma with some real-world truths that I found to be quite effective. This allows the viewer an incite into to the first film without ever having to see it and this lets DaCosta expand upon the story in a more socially relevant manner.

There is a lot to unpack that makes me want to revisit this, but what I found disappointing was a lack of visual style from DaCosta. Seeing that this is only her second film and it’s a spiritual sequel and her next venture is a Marvel movie, I think it’s going to be awhile before we see her at the height of her true creative prowess.
