I prefer the sequels (Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End) for the gonzo, fast paced, wacky adventure as well as Davy Jones. But this has the best world building and adventure out of the trilogy. It’s well paced in how the story unravels and immerses the viewer into the world of these Pirates much better than the next two installments. Verbinski wanted to make something like a traditional adventure/historical epic and he did just that with this film. It’s got the triumphant score, heavy time period set/costume/prop design and the epic scope like old Hollywood epics. Plus the use of practical effects ground this one more towards our reality. I think that’s why the next two weren’t as acclaimed bc they were more CGI heavy and included more fantasy elements and ridiculous moments. But that’s what I love more about those two.
Why should I compare this one to the next two? They’re all from the same GOATed trilogy and are great films on their own.
