It’s been way too long since I last watched this and man, it hits even harder than I remembered. This *might* be Rian’s best but when you’re as good as he is, any film could be his best. Also, watching this and seeing JGL made me happy he’s starting to get work again, I missed that man.

A bit more emotional weight to this and it could easily be 4-4.5 star range. All of the lead performances are great, although some I feel slightly underutilized. Michael Shannon is easily one of the best working actors today and I wish he was my father. The lesser of the Shannon being Martell’s dad cinematic universe.

I feel like an eventual rewatch will bump this up to 4 stars (or maybe even higher, who knows). OR, it could do quite the opposite and go down. For now, I enjoyed what I saw and had a good time with the constant existential dread layered in with 450 other themes. Jesse Plemons is a future all timer, absolute god tier talent, I love him and hope to see him continue to dominate every role he grabs. Also, I definitely plan on trying to read the book here soon.

Holds up just fine as one of the most impressive action spectacles of all time. There was a time where this was 11-15 year old Matthias’ favorite movie ever.

I much prefer this to The Art of Self Defense. Great performance from Leland and seeing bald Jon Gries was an added bonus. My main complaint with this is the same complaint I have with another film that had both Leland Orser and Lance Reddick in it and that’s that there wasn’t enough Lance Reddick.

It has a way of having a lot to say without actually... understanding what it’s trying to say. It both actively acts as a critique on toxic masculinity but also acts as a movie that doesn’t completely get it. Hollow messages aside, the movie itself was pretty fun and I chuckled and even laughed a good few times. Alessandro Nivola and Jesse Eisenberg were both great, just wish it had a bit more depth to it.

Incredible how with such little screen time, Chadwick Boseman had one of, if not the most impactful screen presences of the year. His final scene in this is an all timer for me and watching it now made it hit even harder. We lost a great one far too soon but the legacy and impact he built in such a small amount of time will be long everlasting. Thank you for all the wonderful memories and the inspiration you gave to everyone. 💜 👑

Really disappointed I didn’t get around to this sooner. I’m a sucker for rotoscope animation and this was certainly my shit. Daveed Diggs would be the world’s best teacher.
