Possessor ★★★★

Not for the faint of heart, this brutal, baroque thriller is a return to the vintage “body horror” of David Cronenberg—written and directed by his son, Brandon. Or maybe it’s the cold-hearted speculative fiction version of All of Me, with Andrea Riseborough (“possessor,” via “implant sync”) and Christopher Abbott (“possessed,” pawn for the corporate spy games run by Existenz star Jennifer Jason Leigh) fighting it out in Abbott’s mind and body. Bearing the mantle of Scanners and Videodrome it’s also unique in its own way, and highly recommended if you’re not put off by the family tendency toward ruthlessly observed carnage.
