Probably the best film no one hears about, Underground is so full of life yet soaked in death.

The director, Emir Kusturica has somehow turned the real world into a Fellini party, a Lubitsch romance with Alex Cox punk poetry mixed with Powell and Pressburger cinematic weight.

At 2 hours and 45 minutes Underground only ever rests when the chapter cards appear on screen. Starting with a mentally challenged innocent young man at a zoo trying to protect a chimp…

Max hangs onto the only tree we see in the film, as a huge piece of man made machinery rips it out of the earth.

True poetic imagery in an action masterpiece.

An expertly shot enlongated Breaking Bad episode with an amazing send off. Nothing spectacular but damn does it look and feel good. Gilligan is just so good at casting and world building, he knows how to fill his story out.

The director refers to Kevin Bacon’s dick as Kevin’s bacon.

This is such a great mishmash of art/commerce/erotica/thriller that it’s hard not to love.

Listening to the director talk about the opening montage from swamp to city really blew my mind. You think trash movies are made by trash people but damn, his concept of going from the ocean to sea creatures to birds to people to the city trying to show life’s evolution is very cool. No idea how that fits with the story but the vibe is lovely.

I find it strange that this movie is so popular. I see 'bros' quoting it and they always have this next to Goodfellas and The Sopranos and Entourage in their collection of movies(as do I). I think a lot of people like it for the wrong reasons. They like the violence and the guns and DENIRO. But for me this is the quintessential art house film: ambiguous in it's meaning, a meandering story with no plot in sight, a protagonist…
