    Some great ideas in deconstructing the first film through the lead protagonist (Julie Harte) at film school but ultimately are we better off seeing The Souvenir Part II? I personally think not. I think it weakens a masterpiece of filmmaking in The Souvenir I. However it does has a lot of strengths on its own terms, some beautifully written dialogue and nuanced acting, some clever ideas and observations. Fantastic cinematography and editing. In a storyline it certainly epitomises the typical emerging filmmaker journey but does it add to the original film? does it give more and enrich the first film? Personally I think probably not.

    Some good acting bring to life a poor and dis-jointed script. Clunky direction, questionable editing and very poorly paced. At times the film does have it's moments every now and again, there are some good ideas on the themes of exploitation but ultimately the film tries to do and say too many things. Bravo to the casting director though, the acting was very strong right across the entire cast (with the exception of the art gallery owner who either overacted or was told to do so).

    I think I should declare a bias, my white British uncle emigrated and grew up in Mobile Alabama, but regardless of this I feel Descendant is a special documentary. Not only does it cover an important part of Black Slave History but it reveals the legacy of the slave trade in the ownership of land, town planning and those that live on to reap the rewards of this terrible period of history.
