Let me just say that I loathe Adam McKay. He's made one movie that's not a total piece of crap, somehow got dozens of awards and nominations for that and now for some reason he's one of the more popular directors in Hollywood? Not sure how controversial I'm gonna be with this take, but out of all the Studio Ghibli movies I've seen so far I think this is the best one, better than Spirited Away, better than Grave of the Fireflies and better than My Neighbor Totoro. I think this review is mainly gonna be me explaining why I prefer The Wind Rises over Spirited Away (which seems to be most people's favorite Ghibli/Miyazaki movie).

Lmao watching this after Broker is just perfect. I really like how every woman in Freddie's life either is pushed by or pushes her away, and only the men (that show their feelings in.... interesting ways) remain without her having a solid connection to them. There were some beautiful shots, but ultimately I think this movie would've worked better if the main character was more sympathetic, or if I had a better understanding of why she acts this way.

A really nice company piece to Shoplifters. I really enjoy that there are no evil characters or true antagonists in this movie (similar to Shoplifters). All characters are very sympathetic and/or have good reasons to do what they do. The interactions between every character is endearing as well. It's a very kind movie, and that makes it easy and fun to watch but also a bit unchallenging. The movie is neither predictable nor unpredictable, and I love that not everything about every character is plainly spelled out.

The entire opening sequence is basically a recreation of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It almost entirely takes place in a van, except when they stop for gas, there is a lot of associative imagery with cattle, the main characters arrive at an old farm in the middle of nowhere in Texas. Even the lighting is similar. Though it sounds like a knock-off, it actually doesn't feel like one.
