Lone Star has kind of a soap opera pilot vibe, albeit with issues a bit more complex than the ones in regular soaps.
Another one of those science-y films that don't offer much insight into anything like the human behaviour, the mind, the nature, the history, religion. It mentions it all but doesn't go anywhere deeper. As usual for such films, it's weird, frantic, loud, cold...
More an excersize in style than a complete film, Pi is respectable debut for Darren Aronofsky.
Bonus plus is a short running time. Any minut longer would have been a drag
the plot sounds so simple - an ambitious drummer Andrew, a loner student at the prestigious music conservatory, joins the jazz band conducted by strict and cruel perfectionist Fletcher. Whiplash is the movie about ambition, addictive pursuit of greatness and perfection, madness and revenge. it is electrifying, tense, thrilling and emotionally very powerful, just like jazz itself. it's enhanced by the wonderful performances from Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons. both actor are incredible in their roles and they play each other off so well. Teller makes you feel every drop of Andrew's sweat and Simmons makes your blood boil.
