Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ★★★★

a surprisingly mature and sincere film from Tarantino. less focused on replicating the styles of the past like in a lot of his pervious films, this film is much more concerned with the past itself and the nostalgia of it. so much of this film is just a laid back look as we watch different characters live out their lives in the final days of the golden age of Hollywood. Tarantino takes this time in Hollywood that he so obviously loves and connects it not only to Hollywood today but even his own career. it’s a surprisingly reflexive film from him and one with a surprising amount of heart. from Rick and Cliff’s friendship to the interpretation of Sharon Tate, there’s a strong emotional backbone to this film that is both surprising and welcoming. a lot of that is also thanks in part to some truly great performances from its main leads. DiCaprio gives one of the strongest performances in recent memory from him, Pitt is also giving one of the best performances of his career, and Robbie absolutely shines and proves she doesn’t need many lines to soar.

there will be a strong discourse around this, Twitter has proven that. and many opinions on both sides have been completely valid, y’all should accept criticisms of things you like it’s honestly quite healthy. i might surprisingly see this for a second time, there’s a lot to discuss about it.
