Burrows’s review published on Letterboxd:
I am still at a complete loss why this film works so well. My second viewing, and it holds up very well. Miles Morales' character holds up extremely well, and his relationships are fairly sincere. The scenes in which Miles is stalked by the Prowler work on an effective Sci-fi horror level--that music is amazing.
And the animation is hypnotically stunning.
In my mind, there is a simplicity and cliche in this film's backbone that I struggle to get into--the whole particle-collider thing and the oddness of Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham, and Spider-Anime. This stuff shouldn't work. It's too foolish--dumb, actually. But as with LEGO MOVIE a few years ago, lightning seems to have been caught in a bottle with this one as this bizarre combination of elements comes together with a clear energy while also managing to have a feasible serious side.
