oh OKAY so when a woman is miraculously hyper-competent in combat she’s perceived as a “mary sue” but when an aging man does the same it’s “the third highest rated film on letterboxd”

william bradley pitt lodged the semi-forgettable line “What’s in the box?” into the cultural vernacular with his excruciatingly denial-laden delivery of “Wh-aa-A-T’S IN THE BOoOooOoOoOoOoooX!??!?!!????” and that’s why i’d like to officially submit detective david mills as his best leading dramatic performance to date. i’m counting Tree of Life as a supporting role so DON’T try it, Malick Minions

not to make every conceivable thing about brad pitt but i have not known one day of peace since i found out that he and reese witherspoon almost played nick and amy. that would be such a different movie and it wouldn’t have worked AT ALL yet .... i WANT IT!!! not even the whole thing — i’d be satisfied with just the screen tests.

but again, it wouldn’t have worked: ben affleck’s face is easier to villainize, and rosamund…

my friend and i only got 40 minutes in before other people came over to “pregame” to “go out” because it was “saturday night” or whatever and the whole time i was sitting at the bar, munching on cheesy bread, i was thinking about how i could be watching a washed-up pop star and a manic pixie dream lyricist slowly fall in love over a newfound respect for one another’s craft :(

also, on the topic of pleasant musical rom-coms, happy 1 year anniversary of mamma mia! here we go again!!!! :)

one of my cinematic pet peeves is when a character's reaction to a nosebleed is to tilt their heads back instead of forward. speaking as a frequent nose-bleeder, NO!!!! do NOT do that!!!! that's how you swallow blood clots, you AMATEURS. you nosebleed DILETTANTES.

what i'm getting at is this: when elio's nose starts bleeding and he leans forward ...... BRILLIANT! exactly what you're supposed to do! and there's even an added bonus of his going to find ice to…

highlights from the commentary with david fincher, edward norton, helena bonham carter, and 💘brad pitt💘

-brad: "god, helena walks a fine line. she is tasty. her role actually read a little more redundant than mine and edward's. a little more monotone. and she didn't get the credit she deserved here. little delicate twists and turns that really filled the thing in. she's phenomenal."
    (pause)
ed: "helena's got such big cheekbones"

“i like sad songs. they make me wanna lie on the floor.”

sometimes this True Stories line plays in my head when i’m listening to mitski and lying on the floor and i think about how natural and human it is to feel sadness and how it is proof that i am a real living person with thoughts and emotions and no, it’s nothing to romanticize, but it is something to accept, and maybe even appreciate, and a burning ray…

i took my friend to see this and a week later she said it affected her so much that she cried about it for an entire therapy session, which is probably yorgos’s ultimate artistic goal and would mean more to him than any of the major directing awards that he should be earning!
