Hoop-Tober 2.0 # 11
Morgana O'Reilly stars as Kylie, a bit of a wild child with drink and drug problems who is caught trying to steal money from an A.T.M. Sentenced to 8 months under house arrest she must return to her childhood home and move back in with her perennially cheerful Mother and her put upon step-father. Kylie's mother, although well meaning is convinced the house is haunted and although sceptical at first it isn't long before Kylie suspects there may be some truth to her mothers claims.
This film works on two levels, as a haunted house mystery its full of suspense with some nice creepy scenes, jump scares and surprising twists while as a character driven horror comedy there is plenty of humorous interplay between the snide and sarcastic Kylie and her more jovial chatterbox Mother played wonderfully by Rima Te Wiata. The role of Amos (Glen-Paul Waru) the parole officer cum ghost hunter/paranormal investigator also garners plenty of laughs as he teams up with Kylie making for an unlikely double act. Its also refreshing to watch a horror movie with a strong female lead who doesn't scare easily and ends up being a bit of a bad-ass.
New Zealand seems to be on a bit of a role at the minute when it comes to comedy horror films and this proceeded Deathgasm and Turbo Kid to help fly the flag, well worth checking out.
